You can participate and share in activities and projects with local experts all over Australia. Human activities that result in artificial flooding of waterways may drown the nests of these birds. The nest is at the end of a burrow dug out of soil in a riverbank. Our education programs share knowledge and experience in a friendly hands-on environment with staff and volunteers that know and love Australia's birds and their habitats. Our Bird Observatories in Western Australia may be a little off the track, but that’s what makes them such magical places to see birds. The azure kingfisher (Ceyx azureus) is a small kingfisher in the river kingfisher subfamily, Alcedininae.[2]. White Library is the most comprehensive ornithological library in Australia, containing thousands of books, journals, and media about birds and related topics. This diminutive species inhabits the vegetation beside waterways and other wetlands, where it often perches on low, overhanging branches, searching for its prey of fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects, captured by shallow plunging into the water. An Azure kingfisher is a small aquatic kingfisher. With its combination of royal-blue plumage on its upperparts contrasting with orange on its underparts, the Azure Kingfisher is one of the smallest and most dazzling kingfishers in Australia.

The best place to look for it is here.

Prey items include: fish, crustaceans, aquatic insects and other invertebrates, and, sometimes, frogs.

BirdLife Australia has a long and proud history of excellence in publishing. The Azure Kingfisher has a similar shape to the Little Kingfisher, A. pusilla, but is much bigger and is distinguished by its orange underparts and violet sheen. It is sometimes seen in parks on rivers, as well as duck or goldfish ponds in urban areas. The members of BirdLife Australia, along with our supporters and partners, have been powerful advocates for native birds and the conservation of their habitats since 1901. Our policies, submissions and campaigns make us the leading voice for Australia’s birds by influencing decision makers and stakeholders. The azure kingfisher measures 17–19 cm (6.7–7.5 in) in length,[2] and the male weighs 29–32 g (1.0–1.1 oz) while the female is slightly heavier at 31–35 g (1.1–1.2 oz). It has a long black beak and a whitish rear eye spot. Join as a member, volunteer, make a donation or a bequest. Azure kingfishers take it in turn to burrow out a tunnel using their feet, then they hollow out a thin chamber at the tunnel’s end where they lay their eggs. Pelican, penguin or cockatoo – which sock is the best fit for you?! A pair builds its nest together, taking three to seven days to construct the tunnel. Kingfishers are fiercely territorial when defending their nests.
