In California, it’s uncommon for someone to swear off these funds in a State Senate race, because the maximum contribution limit for this race is high — $4,700. For me, that looks like single-payer health care, a $20 minimum wage, expanded labor protections, free childcare, free and quality school from pre-K through college, and increased teacher pay. Why are you running? In San Francisco, we have places like Hunters Point, where the median income is something like $35,000 a year, and then only half a mile away, the median income can be $120,000 a year. It’s the money that is continuously circulated through our local economy. (Twitter). Every action that we have here — whether that’s buying a laptop or solar panels or a specific piece of clothing — has effects elsewhere in the world. What is the rationale for public banking? JF: We need to cancel rent and cancel evictions for the length of the pandemic. It’s so exciting to see. [Editor's Note: Fielder has made it to the general election on Nov. 3. MBW: Who, aside from your team members and your volunteers, has helped or inspired you in this process?JF: So many other candidates that have blazed the trail before me, like [AC Transit Board candidate] Jovanka Beckles in the East Bay or my friend Gabriela López, who is a Board of Education commissioner here and also ran a grassroots campaign. So a month later, we got the Board of Supervisors to pass a resolution, which is a nonbinding intention saying we’re going to divest our $10 billion from Wall Street. The state has the highest concentration of billionaires in the country, but we also rival Florida and Louisiana for the highest poverty rate in the nation. What do you know? I didn't plan on running far in advance; I decided to run in November [2019] when I saw that my opponent [State Senator Scott Wiener] was walking into another four years essentially unchallenged. And so I decided to follow the money. She was raised by a single working-class mother in an under-resourced community, graduated from California public schools, and earned a place at Stanford University. I was just endorsed by the San Francisco Tenants Union. I saw that, got in touch with them, they supported me and my motivation to bring it into San Francisco.

For every doubt I have, there's someone who's telling me, "You can do this. California is ripe for a revolution. So when she announced her candidacy, Fielder was already well-respected for her organizing work — and volunteers quickly hit the phones and the streets to get the word out. My plan for affordable housing, California Homes for All, is a radically different approach to California’s housing crisis, focusing on building to the needs of our communities rather than the profits of real estate developers. I got involved with DSA San Francisco when I was recruited to manage the campaign against Proposition H, which was in June 2018. What’s on your policy agenda for Sacramento? We should have a public education system on par with the best in the world. Like many DSA-backed campaigns, hers features a strong focus on economic equality and an unsparing critique of her Democratic Party primary opponent Scott Wiener. Then she captured one-third of the vote in the March primaries. We want to defund the police and corrections and actually invest in health care, housing, and a Green New Deal for California. From an indigenous perspective, sharing, cooperation, and slowness is the way that we survive, so anything opposite of that, which is fast, greed, individualism — it’s just not working out for us.

Now, with this new wave of Black Lives Matter protests, we’re seeing one of my biggest dreams from that era come true, which is the divorcing of law enforcement unions from more progressive candidates. Freedom of movement is a human right, and that means we need to invest in transportation for equity and the environment. I have students at San Francisco State who are leaving with so much debt, a handful of them are unhoused or housing-insecure. But there are so many compassionate people here who care about racial, economic, and environmental justice. But it’s basically a public option for finance. “I’m taking on a politician, who’s chosen to put his backers in the real estate and charter school lobbies above his working-class constituents here in District 11,” Fielder adds.
